> Lewis University is moving to Ellucian Student, HCM and Finance through Project Tailwind, part of its Taking Flight strategic plan for 2026–2029.

## Key points

- Excelsior University deployed Scholarship Universe early while its Ellucian Student implementation is still ongoing.

Lewis University serves more than 7,000 students today.

Lewis has used Ellucian for more than a decade and will now move to Ellucian Student. Student, HCM (Human Capital Management) and Finance work together as a single AI-native platform. Lewis will roll out the platform through Project Tailwind, its modernization effort spanning the whole institution. Project Tailwind is a key part of the university's Taking Flight strategic plan for 2026, 2029.

The link to the plan is the part worth noticing. The release names traditional, online, workforce and lifelong learners as the groups Lewis wants to reach. It also lists support for an expanding population of those learners among the goals of the new platform.

## Students, staff and budgets on one platform

The release says the digital transformation at Lewis University will link Student, HCM and Finance on one connected, AI-native platform. Reporting and analytics will improve, with real-time insight into the institution. Intelligent automation will simplify routine administrative work, freeing faculty and staff to spend more time with students directly. The university will also become more agile, which supports strategic growth and new partnerships as it serves a growing number of traditional, online, workforce and lifelong learners.

In the release, Lewis University CIO Michael Rading said Ellucian Student ties together the systems, data and processes that support students, faculty and staff, which lets the university act faster and make better-informed decisions. Laura Ipsen, Ellucian's president and CEO, said Lewis is pairing its own vision with AI that draws on decades of higher education expertise. That combination, she said, is "providing the insight and automation the university needs to adapt with confidence and prioritize student success in every decision."

## A three-year plan with a system inside it

Five linked pillars support Lewis University's Taking Flight plan: Inclusive Impact, Strategic Growth, Future-Ready Learning, Thriving Innovation and High Performance Culture. Two of them could affect the new system most directly. Inclusive Impact targets underserved, international and nontraditional learners. Strategic Growth centers on partnerships, using strategic collaborations at the local, national and global levels to expand the university's reach and resilience. Kip Kline, who serves as Vice President for University Advancement, leads this pillar together with Daisy Sherry, the Interim Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences.

Three years is a short window for a modernization that spans student, HR and finance records. Neither the release nor the plan gives an implementation schedule or go-live dates for Project Tailwind, so it is not yet clear how much of the plan period the new platform will be running for.

## Excelsior's different starting line

Excelsior University recently moved from college to university status as part of a broader expansion strategy, according to an Ellucian customer story. Frank Azuola was hired as CIO to lead digital transformation across the institution, starting with its student information system.

Excelsior's reasons were risk and scale. The old system's scalability limits and reliance on institutional knowledge created increasing risk, particularly in staffing and long-term sustainability. Excelsior used a strategic RFP, and academic and administrative stakeholders took part in defining requirements and evaluating vendors. Its goals included reducing long-term technology and staffing risk and enabling access to the broader SaaS community. The transition also provides automatic updates that reduce upgrade disruption. Implementation is ongoing, and early deployments such as Scholarship Universe have already delivered value to students.

Lewis comes from more than ten years inside the Ellucian customer base. That is a different kind of project from leaving a 24-year-old in-house system. Still, the two cases share a pattern: an institution planning to grow, and choosing the same student platform as its foundation.

## What would test the growth reading

The strongest objection is that software doesn't enroll anyone. The 10,000-plus figure is a vision statement, not a dated enrollment target. The plan gives the growth work to pillars on partnerships, access and new learning models, each led by co-chairs who are still developing initiatives. Seen that way, Ellucian Student supports the growth rather than produces it, and the system will only be judged as part of the larger plan.

That makes the first visible pieces of Project Tailwind the signal to watch. The sign would be new partnerships, online offerings or workforce programs launching on the connected platform during the 2026, 2029 window, with results reported from one system rather than pieced together from several.
