> Copyleaks touts wide LMS reach; billing and sensitivity shape use

## Key points

- When nearly nine in ten students use AI for schoolwork, the sensitivity threshold a school sets in Copyleaks works as its AI policy, written in software.
- Copyleaks says the integration brings it to learning management systems used by approximately 80% of the K-12 market and 95% of higher education institutions. That is the ceiling on who could turn it on, not a count of paying schools.
- Before scanning against Copyleaks' Shared Data Hub, institutions decide whether student papers join a pool shared with other institutions. The API can limit comparisons to the school's own submissions and permanently purge documents.

The headline figure is reach. Copyleaks says the Google Classroom integration brings it to learning management systems used by approximately 80% of the K-12 market and 95% of higher education institutions. Read carefully, that counts the platforms the tool can plug into. It does not count the schools that pay for it. For an academic technology director or a district curriculum lead, the more useful questions are how the product gets bought and what gets decided once it is switched on.

## Paying for it on the LMS bill

The Instructure deal could have the clearest effect on purchasing. Copyleaks says it was recently named a top-tier strategic sales partner, and that Instructure's global sales organization will directly offer Copyleaks' AI and text-matching tools to K-12 and higher education institutions. On its own blog, Copyleaks describes itself as Instructure's Recommended Academic Integrity Partner, built into Canvas and payable on the Instructure invoice.

The release describes a partnership with D2L Brightspace that broadens access for colleges and universities. The blog calls it a preferred partnership and says Copyleaks is built into the LMS and payable on the same invoice. Schools on other platforms are covered too: Copyleaks lists compatibility with Blackboard, Moodle, Schoology, Sakai and Edsby.

Billing on the invoice is the detail to notice. A school that already pays Instructure or D2L could add AI writing review as a line on a contract it already holds, without signing up a new vendor. For a district where every new vendor triggers a separate review, that path could be shorter. Neither the release nor the blog gives pricing or contract terms, so cost comparisons will have to come from the sales conversation.

## The sensitivity dial does the policy work

The feature that matters most to an integrity office is a configuration setting. Copyleaks' AI Sensitivity controls let a school match its review threshold to its own rules. At one end, a looser setting keeps false positives down in courses that allow AI help with polishing. At the other, a stricter setting suits courses where AI use is restricted. The blog says administrators can decide which scan settings apply everywhere and which individual educators or departments can adjust by class or assignment.

Copyleaks says its AI Logic feature provides greater visibility into why content may have been flagged. It highlights the language patterns behind AI-related content, so a teacher can see why a passage was flagged as well as that it was. Along with text and source matching, the platform can point to possible AI-generated content, paraphrasing and text manipulation. Copyleaks says its real-time analytics can show where and how AI is most used and which assignments or assignment types may need guidance.

Copyleaks' 2025 AI in Education Trends Report puts student AI use for schoolwork at nearly 90%. When nearly nine in ten students use AI for schoolwork, the sensitivity threshold a school picks in Copyleaks works as its AI policy, written in software.

There is a fair objection to that reading, and Copyleaks raises it itself. The company says its tool supports educator judgment rather than replacing it. A flag starts a review. So the threshold decides what a teacher looks at, and the teacher decides what comes next.

## Where student papers end up

Scanning against the hub runs both ways. After a scan, the document is automatically indexed and stored, so it can be compared with future submissions. One API setting, includeMySubmissions, compares work against the school's own past papers. A second, includeOthersSubmissions, compares it against other institutions' papers. Schools can turn on either one or both. A delete request with the purge parameter set to true removes a document from the hub completely.

## A partnerships veteran runs the channel

Eric Gibbs brings more than 20 years in education technology. He previously led the Americas businesses for the academic integrity platform Ouriginal, where he established global partnerships before the company's acquisition by Turnitin. That background fits a strategy built on selling through LMS vendors more than selling to schools one at a time.

In the release, Gibbs describes the job as giving students and educators enough context about AI use to set shared expectations together, with students still owning the thinking behind their work. Whether that approach takes hold will show up in Canvas and Brightspace accounts. The reach numbers say the tool is available almost everywhere. The figure that will show whether this strategy works is how many of those institutions add the line to their invoice.
